Difference between learning disability and intellectual disability

Intellectual disabilities & learning disabilities have very different meanings. Intellectual disability is a developmental disorder like autism, however, a learning disability is when someone has a learning disorder like dyslexia.

Intellectual Disability

When a student has an IQ below 70 and a difficulty in performing their daily living activities, social skills, and conceptual and practical skills like self-care, communicating with others, and participating in the community. Autism, Down syndrome, and fragile X syndrome are a few examples of intellectual disability. It does not affect everyone the same, it differs from individual to individual.

Autism

The Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. They are different from most other people and may behave, communicate, interact, and learn differently.

Downs Syndrome

Children with Down syndrome usually are diagnosed before or at birth. It differs from one individual to another, causing lifelong intellectual disability and developmental delays. They have distinct facial features and average in size, but they grow slowly and are shorter than other children the same age.

Fragile X Syndrome

Fragile X syndrome is a genetic condition that results in a wide range of developmental problems Males are more severely affected by this disorder than females. They have mild to moderate intellectual disability.

Intellectual disability is divided into four levels i.e.

• Mild
• Moderate
• Severe
• Profound

When a student does not meet developmental goals, they may be diagnosed with mild intellectual disability, however severe and profound cases are usually diagnosed as early as birth

Learning Disability

It is a neurological condition that affects the brain's ability to send, receive, and process information. A learning-disabled student may face problems in reading, writing, speaking, listening, understanding mathematical concepts, and comprehension. If parents or teachers pay attention or detect early signs of learning disability in a student it can be easier to take the necessary steps to help the student.

The 3 main types of learning disability are as follows

• Dyslexia
• Dyscalculia
• Dysgraphia

A few signs and symptoms of students with learning disabilities in the area of academics that are noticed in the early ages of 5-13

• Difficulty in blending sounds to make words.
• Slow progress seen when it comes to learning new skills.
• Trouble learning basic math concepts.
• Problems with reading comprehension or math skills.
• Trouble with open-ended test questions and word problems.
• Poor handwriting and organizational skills
• Poor organizational skills (bedroom, homework, and desk are messy and disorganized).
• Prompts to carry out a group or a class discussion or share his/her ideas with the group.
• Spells the same word differently in a single document.
• Lack self-confidence when it comes to academic work.

Special needs Education

This education system caters to the needs of children who are not able to cope socially, mentally, or physically from the average to such an extent where modifications are made in their learning.

Educational programmes in special requirements education may follow a similar class if applicable, modified educational content as that offered in the regular education system These programmes can be offered for individual students as a separate class in the same or separate educational institutions.
