These are metaphors, similes, proverbs, idioms, sarcasm, and ambiguity. Figurative language comprises a great deal of everyday communication as it occurs frequently in conversational speech and is essential for successful social interactions.

    SLPs develop students' ability to infer meaning and interpret figurative language by helping them use contextual clues, promoting effective social communication.

  11. Higher Order Language Skills:
  12. HOTS or metalinguistic language skills are complex language abilities that require advanced language processing skills like understanding advanced vocabulary, word relationships and reasoning. These are inferencing, predicting, cause and effect, problem-solving, deductive reasoning and understanding jokes, riddles, and humor. These skills are critical for comprehension of academic tasks in school as well as successful social interactions

  14. Many children in special education face challenges in reading comprehension as they struggle to understand texts and engage with academic content.
