What is Dyscalculia? How to help children with Dyscalculia in studies?
Students often find Mathematics to be challenging and thus develop a dislike towards the subject. It is not uncommon to find student making calculation errors when solving a sum or struggle to remember the sequence in which an algebraic expression is to be solved. It is the intensity and the duration of this struggle which determines if a child has Dysgraphia.
Dysgraphia is a learning disability for understanding math related concepts.
Children who suffer from Dysgraphia show the following signs:
How to work with students with dysgraphia?
Build their interest
It is of utmost importance that students enjoy what they learn. Figure out ways in which math concepts can be taught in a creative, playful and in an enjoyable way. Use of manipulatives, audio visual aids, colorful flashcards, incorporate games to explain mathematical concepts etc.
Hands on learning
When children learn the reasoning behind mathematical rules, they find it easier to make connections and are thus able to retain and relate them easily. Thus, providing hands on learning experience allows students to comprehend the concept fully. For example, when teaching multiplication use straws to show how numbers increase in a tangible amount.
Use of manipulatives
Straws, beads, cards, sticks, flash cards, blocks, any many more are useful tools in teaching math. When counting numbers, encourage children to pick up sticks and place them on a plate. This visual learning will help them see numbers increase and what numbers are feeling in physical form.
Teach and Test
Regular assessments on topics taught ensures students are abreast with previously learnt concepts and reinforces revision.
With timely intervention and consistent practice, it is possible to help students with dyscalculia.
